Elevator pitch: DPG Energy’s distributed power-generation solution enables individuals, small businesses and communities in rural and remote areas worldwide to economically burn raw or uncleansed biogas and consume their own reliable, low-cost and clean on-site power, 24/7.
Anaerobic digestive system manufacturers are repeatedly forced to leave viable new business on the table with small-scale dairy and livestock producers overwhelmed by the large capital outlays and ongoing maintenance costs required to (a) cleanse the corrosive biogas before it can be burned in an internal combustion engine and (b) purchase expensive, oversized and underutilized power plants.
Driven by a very small patented microturbine, DPG Energy’s multi-fuel combined heat and power (CHP) solution contains proprietary technology allowing it to burn raw biogas – thus eliminating the need for and substantial expense of “scrubbing” equipment to clean the caustic “dirty gas” prior to its being combusted. DPG Energy’s CHP units are right-sized and cost-effective for small-scale needs requiring up to 20 kilowatts (kWs) of efficient, uninterruptible and low-emission power and can easily be coupled together to fulfill increasing power requirements up to 80 kWs.
How we make a difference: Combining DPG Energy’s unit with an anaerobic digester enables small-scale dairy and livestock production operators to have secure, reliable power through a readily available renewable energy source, accelerate best practices in animal-waste management, reduce greenhouse gas emissions traditionally associated with centralized power plants and dramatically reduce harmful methane emissions that are damaging the quality of our air, water and community health.
The significant methane content and pollutants in organic waste such as dairy cow manure has become a local-to-global problem:
- There are currently 9.2 million dairy cows in the US alone. Each cow excretes about 120 pounds of manure, every day.
- The dairy cow industry is responsible for 43%* of methane emissions from animal waste (*USDA, 2/2011).
- Methane is 20 times more effective trapping heat in our atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
- Biogas is comprised of 60%-70% methane, natural gas, nitrous oxide and trace amounts of other substances.
- Burning one ton of methane (biogas) is equivalent to eliminating 24 tons of carbon dioxide.
If we win? A pre-revenue startup funded by its founders to date, DPG Energy currently has six domestic and multi-national anaerobic digester manufacturers eager to field test our unit. We believe the Cleantech Open program’s high standards and focus on excellence will help raise our profile, enabling our company to secure the additional capital required to bring DPG Energy’s products to reality.
Cleantech Open anecdote: Two “pivot points” immediately come to mind: (1) The coaching from several Cleantech Open Southeast Region mentors and judges (following the award ceremony) prompted DPG Energy to readdress how we view our intellectual property. (2) The Cleantech Open experience strengthened our resolve to integrate critical success factors across our business model that helps minimize our environmental impact, promote renewable resources and positively impact the global community.
