Elevator pitch: Tethis makes polymers that are made from natural materials that can be waste products from other industries. Tethex, our first product acts like a salt-sucking sponge which absorbs salts, heavy metals, and even nuclear material out of water on contact. Applications include various water treatment and desalination applications and even diapers!
How we make a difference: Our goal is to take thousands of tons of waste and treat billions of gallons of water that are currently untreatable and thrown away. Tethex replaces the thousands of tons of petrochemical-based water treatment materials (called ion exchange resins) with an easy-to-produce biomaterial.
If we win? We’re in the final leg of scale and are really excited about the opportunity to get this product to market either by ourselves or with a partner. Winning the global forum will give us the platform to make that final push to market.
Cleantech Open anecdote: We were asked to do a pitch during an interest meeting back in May for the Cleantech Open here in the Southeast since the accelerator is new here in North Carolina. I listed off a few oil and gas companies that I thought would be excited about what we had, and the minute I got off the stage, one of the Cleantech Southeast directors pulled me aside and said he knew all of them! On the first day!
