Elevator pitch: Sealed is a new kind of energy company that guarantees savings from home energy efficiency improvements. Following the installation of efficiency improvements like insulation, air sealing and HVAC upgrades, Sealed replaces homeowners’ utility bills with a single Sealed Energy Bill guaranteed to be lower than normal. The size of the guarantee is based on Sealed’s proprietary analytics that determine an appropriate guarantee based on the home and project characteristics.
How we make a difference: Sealed is solving the single biggest barrier to the greater adoption of residential energy efficiency: lack of confidence in energy savings. This represents a $28 billion potential market. By guaranteeing savings, Sealed will enable the rapid adoption of energy efficiency in homes across the country. Sealed will not only save homeowners money every year, but we can catalyze residential carbon savings equivalent to 10 percent of US 2020 carbon goals and create hundreds of thousands of local, green jobs.
If we win? A win at the Global Forum would not only enable Sealed to accelerate the rollout of our guaranteed savings product to more states, but it would also raise the profile of the company, creating a number of potential and exciting partnerships with companies across the country.
Cleantech Open anecdote: After we were named a national finalist at Cleantech Open Northeast, I had the opportunity to speak for a few minutes with Tom King, the president of the US National Grid, and to have a follow-up conversation with his colleague Ed White, the head of strategy. They both had very supportive things to say about Sealed, which was great, but also a bit surprising. Having previously helped build a company that sold to utility companies, I had assumed that utility executives would be indifferent at best and hostile at worst to the concept of Sealed since we replace their customers’ utility bills. These conversations have made me realize that Sealed may actually have an ally in utility companies, and that they may be a future partner going to market.
