Elevator pitch: As electronic devices are beginning to fail after running exceptionally hot, and landfills are beginning to fill with convection cooling fans (e-waste), it is readily understood that the current performance demand in electronics is at a point where silicon is unable to perform adequately. One promising solution is the integration of diamond thin-film technology, as diamond can conduct heat 22x more efficiently than silicon and 5x more efficiently than copper. Further, the semiconductor properties of diamond—in particular, the Miraj Diamond™ Platform—allow for faster devices, which are thinner (>1000x), cost competitive, and run cooler, allowing for the next generation of consumer electronics.
How we make a difference: The Miraj Diamond™ Platform, a breakthrough energy-efficient semiconductor technology, combines two newly developed diamond technologies: low-temperature nanocrystalline diamond deposition technology and an efficient n-type semiconductor doping process. The combination of these breakthroughs allows, for the first time, a commercially feasible approach to creating cheaper better devices that rely on integrated circuits—transformational to telecommunications, consumer electronics, defense, and aviation electronics.
If we win: Winning the Global Forum would put AKHAN Technologies front and center in the cleantech sector, fostering our rapid entry into key market segments. As our technology is now positioned for rapid commercialization, the prize investment would facilitate key hires to accomplish this task. Also, winning the Global Forum would be the crowning jewel on an award winning year for AKHAN (R&D100, Chicago Innovation Awards, Defense and Energy Technology Challenge).
Cleantech Open anecdote: It was interesting to have discussions with a materials venture funding firm months ago, only to see that they were sponsors of the Cleantech Open. This gave us a boost in reputation as we were originally approached for our white paper publication and key press release announcements, and for the VC to see we were competing in the Cleantech Open really drove the innovation message home.
